Widening the Sleeves

Awesome ideas from the Yahoo group, part two:

Hi All,

While I'm at it, if you're considering widening the sleeves, here's
what I would suggest:

Where it says "cont in patt until sleeve measures 12(12, 12.25, 12.25,
12.5, 13)" you should adjust that number and cast on sooner. Since
you'll add half the width at the start of the sleeve, and half at the
end, cast on a half an inch sooner for each inch of sleeve width you
want to increase.

Assuming you don't want to increase the cuff width*, you'll have to
add in a few more short rows to compensate for the extra width.
You're doing this so your cuff stays the same width, and the upper arm
gets wider.

Adding an inch of width:

Do 2 more sets of short rows. Instead of going to Short Row 12,
you'll go up to Short Row 16. (2 more sets of repeating rows 3 and
4). I would also decrease the number of sts between each short row by
1 (this will add more of the width to the upper portion of the arm).

Adding 2 inches of width:

Do 4 more sets of short rows. Instead of going to Short Row 12,
you'll go up to Short Row 20. (4 more sets of repeating rows 3 and
4). I would also decrease the number of sts between each short row by
3 (this will add more of the width to the upper portion of the arm).

After the short rows, it says to work 28 more rows even in patt.
Follow that as is. Your measurement from the fold line to the
shoulder should be the same too (you're not adding length, you're just
starting your sleeve sooner to add width.

When you get to finishing up the short rows along the back of the
sleeve, the instructions say "piece measures about 13.5" from sleeve
CO along division line". Yours will measure whatever the new width
was. So if you're adding an inch, it will measure about 14.5".

I know no one has asked, but it's probably just a matter of time
before someone wants to widen the sleeve. If you do follow these
instructions please let me know if they were helpful, of if you think
I missed something or was unclear.

Lengthening the Sleeves

As I mentioned before, there's another Arwen KAL hosted on a Yahoo group, and for anyone who hasn't already joined, I pledged to share any important insights that arise. Jody, the moderator, recently posted two fabulous suggestions related to the sleeves. I'll post them here separately.
"I reviewed the pattern and I think you are right -- just follow the
instructions for a larger size. The only difference between sizes is
the number of sts you cast on to start the sleeve. So, cast on the
number of sts that correspond to the size you want.

When you get to the shoulder instructions, the number of sts you have
will be a little different than what the pattern says.

Where it says Shape Shoulder:

You'll follow the number of sts from 2 sizes -- for the sleeve, the
larger size that you followed to make the sleeve longer. And for the
knit/purl and bind off number for the shoulder, you'll follow the
smaller size that you chose for the body.

Since there's a marker where the sleeve joins the body, it shouldn't
be too hard to figure out.

When you get to the hood, your st counts will correspond to your body
size, so follow that smaller size when knitting the hood."

Maroon is the new green

In honor of Vanessa's completed Arwen, I've selected maroon as the color for the sidebar to indicate that a knitter has finished. Look over there ---> see?

In further honor of Vanessa, have you seen the incredible amount of Christmas knitting she has accomplished? That's more than I can knit in an entire year!

Just starting and I already have a question

I received my Arwen yarn yesterday. Yipee! I'm using Cascade 220; lavendar heather; colour 2422. I cast on right away and I'm half done the back already.

I have a question about the sleeves. I noticed that there is only one sleeve width (13.5") for all sizes. I have *ahem* chunky upper arms and 13.5" is way too small. I need at least 15" to get my arm in plus ease. Do you think it's ok to start the sleeve a little earlier and do extra short rows?

One other sleeve comment... I noticed that the cuff is 10". I wrapped 10" of tape measure around my average sized wrist and it seems really big. The picture shows a much snugger fit. Do you think the model has huge wrists?

hood grafting

just a hood note. instead of working row 6, only complete row 5, then slip the cable stitches and cross the cable stitches on one side of the hood only. the graft look perfect this way.

Check this out...

My roommate pointed out this pattern to me, which she looked up on the website after seeing the Berroco ad in IK. I thought it could make the perfect accessory to complement the Arwen cardigan. So of course I had to share it with all of you... :)

The handle from M&J Trimmings. Not sure about the button though...

Cable goodness finally

I really like this part of the pattern so far. You get to concentrate on the cables for a little bit, and then zip right along through the stockinette part.
